Look inward. That was the goal when Smac Studio designed this new home for a young family in the beachside suburb of Bondi. “In the summer this area gets busy, so the house needed to feel like an oasis to retreat to,” says Principal Shona McElroy. Bright artwork and textured finishings bring the focus inside with luxurious natural stone, Venetian plaster and sheer curtains balancing elegance with cosiness.
KEY DETAILS
The bathroom features microcement walls and thick pieces of Montenegro quartzite. The same stone is used on the stair in the entrance. “The entrance space is so big and it needed a thoughtful detail to link it to the rest of the house, so we created a stone landing and gave it interesting little curves,” says McElroy.
More natural light was brought into the house by putting large windows down the eastern wall and covering them with sheer curtains for privacy. [The western wall is shared with a neighbour.] McElroy also added skylights to the bathroom and entrance. “I think the double-height void with the skylight at the entrance is a great part of the home, because you walk in and it feels so bright and unexpected,” she says.
A textured microcement wall runs the length of the house from entrance to pool yard. “It expands the space, curving over the fireplace and reflecting light in different patterns throughout the day,” says McElroy.
The powder room features blue Venetian plaster, a colour selected to emphasise tones in the Brenero quartzite vanity. A curved ceiling and walls accommodate the stair above and adjacent laundry.
On a 239 square metre site McElroy worked in four bedrooms, a formal entrance, pool, garden, butlers pantry, powder room, separate laundry, home office and walk-in wardrobe. “We needed the space to work really hard and Shona gave us a layout that did that,” says the owner.
Entry to the master suite is via the robe. “You get to it through the walk-in wardrobe, so we call it the Narnia bathroom,” says McElroy. “I debated having the entrance off the main hallway, but by accessing it through the robe we gained more space and privacy for the bathroom.”
High ceilings and open shelving in the home office create a spacious feel in a two metre wide room.
The kitchen is the designer and client’s favourite room in the house. “It strikes a nice balance between being grown-up and modern and relaxed and a little bit fun,” says McElroy. “The blue Brenero quartzite is evocative of the beach — when I first looked at the slab I felt like it had waves and sandy colours through it.”
