Principal of Smac Studio, Shona McElroy, had two days to design her company’s office and two weeks to fit it out. “It was the fastest job I’ve ever done,” she says. “I had to trust my instincts, there was no time to um and aargh.” Rather than playing it safe under pressure, McElroy painted her walls and ceilings a dark green-grey and used a deep terracotta shade in the bathroom. “There’s a misconception that offices should always be white, but I wanted our workspace to feel warm, more like a boutique or a bar.” McElroy finds clients can be hesitant to use all-over colour and has used her workspace to prove that rooms can feel bright, generous and elegant in a multitude of shades.
Smac Studio’s design values are on display. McElroy used elements commonly seen in her projects, like marble, artworks, feature lighting, velvets, timbers and a real mix of materiality to create an elevated, modern, unique space.
Mirrored cabinetry makes a 25sqm space feel larger. Cabinetry runs the length and width of the shared wall hiding the aircon, kitchenette, bathroom and product samples. By recessing mirrors into the doors the area looks twice as big and reflects foliage on the street outside.
An inspiring workspace for staff. Open shelves display books, magazines and small artworks. The pinboard is framed by the architraves of an old door, once used to connect rooms when the building was a home.
Rule-breaking colours. The real success of this space is that it uses joyful elements and colours while maintaning a calm, elegant ambiance. “It’s fun but grown-up, with unexpected shades and design details,” says McElroy.
