The Sewoon District #4 is original and different in the respect that it revives the old path - urban fabric. The urban fabric is not merely a path but a space that gives a sense of intimacy and provides a private territoriality that cannot be found in large buildings and squares. It plays an important role as an urban space that promotes bonds and communication between people in the city, and satisfies various emotional demands as well as securing the territoriality.
We reconstruct the urban fabric as a system to promote social exchange and diversity in urban life in the 21st century. The design concept of the master plan is ‘urban diversity’. We applied the features of the urban fabric in two ways. One is to reflect the characteristics of urban fabric as a physical space, and the other is to create programs of relationship and diversity.
The substructure of the master plan has created the basis of urban structures that maximize the intimacy and communication, private territoriality and sensibility by introducing various paths, spatial compositions, and scales, which are the characteristic of the urban fabric. Between the lower floors and the upper floors occupied by mega programs such as the office hotel are the intermediary programs, naturally connecting the two parts. On the upper floors, we have planned programs to secure the social relations and diversity of life while maintaining the original characteristics of individual programs.
We reorganize the urban fabric, which is an important element in the site, to give a new meaning and achieve the goal of symbiosis and sustainability through the design strategy of the extended master plan of Sewoon Shopping Center.
The extended master plan determines two important compositions. First of all, the sustainable environment shared with Sewoon Shopping Center is established in the middle area between the shopping center with a group of courtyard-type buildings. Through the extended master plan strategy, the Sewoon Shopping Center and Sewiin Square connects the cultural green axis and respects the historical value of Jongmyo Shrine, which is a World Cultural Heritage site. The Sewoon District #4 master plan establishes a sustainable environment that succeeds the site and surroundings urban fabric, and responds to Jongmyo Shrine. The extended master plan strategy signifies a city in which the old and new physical elements coexist, and realizes the diversity of the city where old and new residents coexist in a natural way.
Through the restructuring of urban fabric and the reconstructed, extended master plan, we aim to create a complex that achieves balance between social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
