Profile of a Single-Family House Project in the Style of a Contemporary Rural House – "Modern Barn"

The thesis of this project was to create a single-story building in the style of a rural house, resembling a masonry barn. The design emphasizes ease of use and minimal maintenance time (no skylights), leading to the choice of natural external cladding materials (ceramics, wood, aluminum), traditional building technologies, and energy-efficient installations.

The most important space for the 2+1 family was to become an open, spacious living area.

The house is located in a suburban village with remnants of farmstead buildings, where new single-family, detached homes are emerging from parceled agricultural lands.

The narrow and long plot with access from the southwest defines a linear structure that efficiently utilizes sunlight and accessibility. This feature has been turned into an advantage, allowing for the sequential division of internal private areas on the plot. Three zones have been designated: the entrance zone (public with a garage area), the day zone (buffer – red barn), and the private zone (quiet residential part with a garden).

Using the provisions of the local plan and the conditions of the existing development, the building is situated deeper into the plot, giving the entrance zone more space and serving as a sort of forecourt for the actual 'barn.'

The day zone becomes a privacy buffer due to its perpendicular arrangement and the increased height of its volume, thereby dominating the form of the entire building. The living space within is designed with an open floor plan that includes a basic kitchen annex. The space is complemented by a library on a non-usable mezzanine and a partially exposed roof truss. The use of flat red roof tiles (including on the facade) highlights the break in the linear sequence of functions and cultivates the character of the old brick buildings of the village.

The private zone continues linearly, and its modularity allows for potential expansion towards the garden. Each bedroom is designed with full height and direct access to the terrace, resulting in great potential for interior arrangement and integration with the outdoor space.

The designed building partitions and heating and energy recovery systems classify the building as an energy-efficient structure.
