Our client had been searching for an inner city warehouse type building for some time. It was a dream to convert such a place to his own private residence. Unlike many aspiring home owners in Sydney, he was not obsessed by a house with a view of the harbour or the ocean. Rather, he wished to create an internal realm, suited to his interests in music, entertaining and visiting friends.
Inner City Warehouse started life as a food manufacturing factory in the early 1900?s. The project involved the conversion of the existing two level warehouse of 1060sqm. Sections of the building were radically altered to introduce light and spatially connect the two levels of the building, incorporating 4 bedrooms, living space, large commercial quality kitchen, music room, a swimming pool and a terrace.
The most significant insertion in the warehouse is the sleeping pod ?cave?, and ensuite on the first floor. This is the owner?s private suite that sits as a piece of sculpture in the main living space. Its internal volumes billowing between the roof trusses. This ?alien? form to the orthogonal geometry of the old warehouse ?creates? new spaces around it by defining the new sitting areas, dining and kitchen.
From early freehand sketches the concept was developed using 3D rhino technology. AJ+C collaborated with MouldCAM to produce specialised hull made up of 14 mould sections of expanded polyurethane foam and glass fibre resin that were assembled, finished and sprayed inside and out on site.
The bathroom floor is constructed from certified sustainable teak flooring in the manner of a yacht deck. Drainage is concealed in the subfloor, light and exhaust is provided by the ?chimney? that punctures the roof of the existing warehouse.
The cave is spatially different and surprising standing in its open warehouse surroundings.
