HQR – H Quarter Roaster is an adaptive reuse project that transforms an abandoned building into a contemporary coffee roastery and café. Instead of demolishing the deteriorated structure, the design embraces its raw industrial character, layering new functions and materials onto the existing framework to create a dialogue between past and present.
The original reinforced concrete skeleton and brickwork are preserved and repaired, while traces of age—cracks, stains, and weathered textures—are revealed as part of the design narrative. In contrast, new insertions of glass and steel open the once-closed façade, inviting light and transparency while connecting the roastery to its urban surroundings.
Inside, the roasting machines form the centerpiece of the space, allowing customers to witness the production process and reinforcing the brand’s ethos of craft and authenticity. Café seating is arranged around this core, blending the warmth of timber surfaces with the raw honesty of exposed concrete and steel. The atmosphere strikes a balance between industrial grit and welcoming comfort, where customers can both observe and relax.
The project is guided by principles of sustainability and efficiency. By reusing the existing building, construction waste and resource consumption are significantly reduced. Passive design strategies—such as natural lighting, ventilation, and shading—further minimize energy demand. Beyond environmental concerns, the adaptive reuse breathes new life into a neglected corner of the city, turning a once-derelict structure into a hub of community activity and cultural engagement.
HQ/R demonstrates how architectural renewal can be both pragmatic and poetic: respecting the memory of a place while adapting it to contemporary needs. Through careful balance of preservation, insertion, and transformation, the project proves that abandoned buildings can evolve into vibrant spaces that carry history forward while serving the present.
