Urban Design Group led the adaptive reuse of Howard Row, a highly degraded block of 19th-century rowhomes in downtown Baltimore’s Market Center National Register District, converting five dilapidated properties into a vibrant mixed-use development. The project preserved historic elements—including original brickwork, storefronts, and window openings—while repairing or replicating assemblies to match the 1870s character. Working closely with Poverni Sheikh Group and Baltimore’s Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP), the team integrated ground-floor commercial spaces with spacious upper-level residential units that maximize light and ventilation. By maintaining structural integrity and meeting modern code requirements, the development revitalizes a long-neglected block, providing retail and housing that supports the surrounding community while honoring the historic streetscape along North Howard Street.
