TAGLINE: Finding a future in sandstone, timber and landscape
THE SITE
the building sits on the coromandel farm nestled beneath the hills of lydenburg
THE BRIEF
living spaces which cocoon in winter and shelter in summer;
a courtyard to celebrate the kloofs;
another to celebrate the river;
bedrooms which open up into the landscapes and showers with views
THE IDEA
finding a future for a historic and inspirational building; a piece of architecture dear to our hearts
MATERIALS
the original materials are retained:
walls of sandstone from the farm, timber floors and ceilings, white stucco internals, and a remarkable landscape which continually finds its way into the home
PROGRAMME
the heart of the house offers
an entertainment space, a sitting room, a massive fireplace, a solarium, a drinks lounge, a dining room, a kitchen, and almost most importantly a room at the centre of the home with a view northwards over the landscape
two long thin courtyards extend off these communal spaces:
an endemically planted court to the west and a water court to the east
these courtyards lead into 6 private suites each with
a bedroom, a small living space, a bathroom, and a washroom
SOLUTIONS
the main issue that needed to be addressed was the problematic and languorous circulation by identifying the courtyards as potential circulation spaces,
we are able to manufacture a more efficient circulation
which also resolves the privacy issues inherent in the original design
CLIENTS
suzanne press, has teamed up with a team of architects: frankie pappas, mayat hart, thomashoff and edna peres to find a future for a building which has been inspirational in their lives as architects
SUSTAINABILITY
the building will be completely off the grid:
water is to be harvested from the site,
solar panels are designed to collect energy sufficient to run the building, with solar and gas geysers to provide hot water to each room, black and grey water are managed on site
CLOSING THOUGHT
architecture is not a surface treatment or a colour or a curvy wall: architecture is a reverence for the future
