Handcrafted Elements and Vivid Storytelling Define the Brand’s New Bazaar-Inspired Store in Bengaluru
Established in 1969, House of Raisons is committed to honouring India’s rich textile crafts through its vast collections, which include saris, ready-to-wear apparel, and fabric. In 2018, Studio Lotus was brought on board to create a distinct retail identity for the brand’s three stores in Delhi NCR. This initiative was part of a broader rebranding effort, which would lend coherence to the diverse range of merchandise and attract a younger demographic while maintaining the trust and patronage of their existing customer base. A key design challenge was that Raisons, despite their premium positioning, were particular about retaining a large product volume—something their customers have come to expect from them. Designed in collaboration with StoryStudio, the Bengaluru store seeks to create an experience that establishes Raisons’ legacy and expertise in handloom craft to a new audience.
Concept – Market++
Building upon the concept established for the Delhi flagship—a contemporary bazaar with Market, Gallery and Archive zones—the new store incorporates storytelling elements and interactive touchpoints that shape an experiential customer journey.
Material palette overview
The shell is dark grey, creating a stark backdrop to the vibrant collections. A combination of marble, mild steel, timber, and brass adds layers of contrast and texture. A flooring pattern in a palette of white and grey Indian marble laid in the crossover geometry of the warp and weft of weaves highlights points of transition between the store’s various sections.
Design interventions: Create a sense of reveal and user journey (Zoning concept)
Inspired by the rhythmic arcades of historic bazaars, the sharp composition of a sleek, central colonnade breaks up the linear footprint. The columns mark off the distinct product segments, thereby recreating the notion of walking down the narrow lanes of a bazaar, each segment treated as a shop in itself. This serves both the functional purpose of visually fragmenting the store’s large inventory, as well as imbuing the customer journey with a sense of discovery.
Starting with their prêt label, Gaurav Rai, at the entrance, one walks down along the patterned stone path turning off into a ‘shop’ for yardage, one for suits, another for saris, finally terminating at 'The Archive’, a section that holds the brand’s exclusive, high-value pieces. The long wall running along the pathway features sections for blouses, potlis, jootis and other accessories, all showcased through customised display elements built into the modular display system.
A brass rail at a height of 2.1m traverses the entire store perimeter, and, together with the colonnade, serves as a key visual anchor and navigational element. This rail hosts all the hanging elements of the display–ladder display units, mirrors, and signage labels for crafts. Along the facade and behind the cash counter, it creates opportunities for visual merchandising and seasonal storytelling. All hanging elements are articulated as brass suspensions wrapped with deep walnut sleeves, maintaining the balance between industrial vs crafted—a signature of Raisons’ spaces.
In the Archive section, the brass rail evolves to hold the curved glass almirahs and brass shelving units containing the brand’s most prized pieces. All these display elements are designed to float off the floor, seemingly hanging off the rail. A large, leather-topped central table and a dramatically lit draping space carved into the corner elevate and lend a sense of exclusivity to the experience.
Design interventions: Weave storytelling into the spaces (Design details of the most important part of the store)
The colonnade also serves as a canvas for storytelling in the form of a Gallery, engaging shoppers with snippets of the craft and artistry involved in making the products. Brass niches are carved into the columns at eye level, each displaying a handcrafted artefact or interactive screen to highlight the bespoke nature of the merchandise. The screens play audio-visual narratives of crafts such as Banarasi, Chanderi, and Gota Patti. Visitors can explore these films as well as browse extended product collections online, allowing for an engaging, omnichannel retail experience tailored to the sensibilities of the discerning, modern, tech-savvy client.
Floating above the main pathway of the store is an all-brass installation developed and executed by Craft Canvas in partnership with Craft Confluence. Brass metal mesh, hand-embroidered with four intricate weaving patterns derived from the brand’s graphic assets, runs along the central axis and cascades down the wall at the far end of the store. Drawing a line of sight for passersby straight down the spine, it provides a striking visual merchandising backdrop for showcasing seasonal collections.
All furniture for the store has been custom-designed to imbue the customer journey with an additional layer of craft. A marquetry pattern using black and walnut-stained veneer wraps the slender black counters and tables. Pendant lights fabricated by Sutra Luminis hang over the tables, designed to function as both ambient and task lighting. Custom-designed carpets, expressed as a collage of embroidery patterns, line the floors of the trial room and draping corner.
Conclusion
With handcraft and storytelling at the heart of the design, the retail store for House of Raisons transforms a compact linear footprint into a canvas of understated luxury. The outcome is an immersive atmosphere transcending a conventional shopping exercise, inviting guests to connect intimately with the beauty, exquisite artistry, and rich history woven into Indian textiles.
