The existing building of the single-family house on the outskirts of a small town is around 100 years old. It was extensively renovated and remodeled in the early 1990s and expanded by a north-facing basement with a terrace above and an entrance area accessed via an outdoor staircase.
The initial situation for the current project development had the following requirements: better access, expansion and enlargement of the kitchen, a new and larger bathroom, and a new toilet.
The following solution was developed: the entrance area was removed and a wooden structure was built across the entire area of the north-facing basement. This now unites the access at garden level with an internal staircase, allowing for a direct connection to the large living kitchen. For this purpose, a large opening was created in the former outer wall. Inside, there is no distinction between the existing structure and the new extension. A large window opening with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors creates a connection to the garden located to the north.
The extension is constructed using a post-and-beam wooden structure with a cross-laminated timber ceiling. The facade is made of ventilated HPL panels. The windows are wood-aluminum windows. The extension is heated with underfloor heating.
