House for an artist represents a small but complex project, where an existing residential building was transformed into the home of an artist and his family.
The house is located in a residential area in the south-western part of the city of Timișoara, in the Iosefin district. The context is common and specific to the area. The original building, with a ground floor layout, dates from around 1930. Since the condition of the existing building was precarious, and did not meet the conditions for its use, it was decided to refurbish and expand it with a ground floor volume and a new attic in order fot it to meet the needs of a contemporary home, while also taking into account the needs of the client.
Due to inappropriate interventions which took place in the 90s, that consisted in expanding the house and new added floors to the building, as well as subsequent interventions carried out by the former owners, the house was left without the interior plasters, but also without the interior carpentry. The exterior carpentry from the courtyard was in an unsalvageable condition, but our proposal succeeded in saving the original carpentry still existing on the main facade.
Since over time the existing building has gone through several structural and functional changes, our proposal tries to return it to a simple form, keeping original elements from the main facade. This facade being the only element of the house that remained intact. Thus, a first stage in this project was the partial demolition of the parasitic areas of the building. The partial demolition of the frame and its reconstruction in its original form, in two bays, lead to a better integration of the building into the streetscape.
By expanding the house, a new access was generated in the building, positioned towards the street, as well as a new volume that includes a new living-room area and a staircase leading to the basement, oriented towards the garden of the house. The proposal also includes the generation of an attic.
The new access device is attached to the existing building, on its left side. It has an honest, contemporary image, which is perceived from the street as a new, utilitarian addition.
In the existing building on the ground floor there are spaces such as: the kitchen with the dining area, a bedroom with its own bathroom and a library where a newly proposed staircase leads to the attic level. In the attic have been positioned 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, an office and an open space that plays the role of a secondary living room.
All interventions aimed at the expansion use a contemporary language, using structural elements as flexible as possible, to create a contrast between the massiveness of the existing building and the new one proposed.
