House Alto

Tulbagh, South Africa

STATUS
Under Construction
SIZE
0 sqft - 1000 sqft
BUDGET
$500K - 1M
It isn't often architects get the opportunity to work on a site as strikingly beautiful as this valley in Tulbagh in the Western Cape of South Africa.
House Alto attempts to create an appreciation for such a magnificent landscape by having as little impact on its context as possible. It does this by lifting itself off of the ground through imposing concrete fins forming the stereotomics of the design, spanned with steel sections creating an interesting spatial dynamic.
Due to the remote location of the site the house has been designed to be entirely off-grid, making it wholly self-sufficient.
When complete the center piece of the house will be a 9m, 3 tonne tilt-up door, allowing the valley to envelop the main living area in its entirety.
