The project Hotel HO! refers to a design of a new summer resort in Mediterranean scenery according to temporary way of living, where simple volumes of buildings intermingle with the landscape and living happens between indoors and outdoors.
Main goal of the design process was the low energy footprint and the adaptation into the environment, by using small openings to the north, proper shading and ventilation as well as keeping simple shapes with variation in quality of spaces, from closed to semi-open and open areas, with patios, arcades and pergolas.
The HO! is basically organized in 3 units: the center with all common functions, outdoor sport facilities and parking spaces, the blocks of rooms around the central pool and the blocks of bungalows isolated from the center. The building units are connected through a net of paths and green spaces which adapt to the terrain and mutate in materials and shape while passing through the different units.
Two strong, massive volumes covered by wooden louvers and the transparent space of the reception in between, compose the center of the hotel. The design has bioclimatic aspects, as the solid façade to the North prevents overheating and the skin of wooden louvers protects the building from the sun and allows a breeze in-between. In addition, a central patio is placed in the Spa & Gym building with a pool-hydro massage and wild flora offering a cool relaxing area. The Café –Restaurant also provides an outdoor space covered with pergola and shade, while an arcade starts from the reception towards the main pool area and rooms, passing by the Café –Restaurant with shops along the way.
Important is the variety of outdoor spaces, with alternations in planting, shading, noise and privacy. Sunbathing and tranquility areas around the pool with a small bar for refreshments, free spaces with sparse high planting for game and relax and rooms with outdoor open corridors, private gardens and balconies.
The block of rooms is organized in a simple way offering a big variation in shapes that allows orientation and adaptation in various terrains. All rooms are planned in a grid and are arranged in a linear sequence with large rooms in the basement and smaller ones on the upper floors. Open, outdoor staircases with corridors connect the buildings and its groups of rooms, following the elevation lines of the plot and preferred orientation.
The block of bungalows on the other hand also follow a simple logic of organization, where the rooms are placed in a row forming arched units, achieving better integration in the terrain, cliffs or bays and a wide range of free view from their private courtyards and pools. They are placed freely on the plot, giving variety to the outdoor space which may extend to the sandy beach, follow the rocks with steps or end up on a platform on the waterfront.
The planting on the plot remains dense with native plants for refreshing, shading and isolating and recedes wherever needed in places creating glades for activities. Every roof is planted with local bushes and plants creating a microclimate that prevents overheating indoors while allowing the continuity of natural site for birds and insects.
The ability of adjusting the size of this hotel is a key parameter in this design process, so the hotel can begin to operate with fewer rooms and grow later by adding more room blocks and bungalows or also creating larger blocks. This clue combined with the flexibility in adapting to different locations and sites, sets this design as a standard model for Resort Hotel HO!
