The restructuring and extension of the Pfastatt Hospital Center is a complex project of reorganization of existing spaces and the creation of new services meeting demanding specifications in an environment with multiple constraints.
The project allows to requalify the whole Hospital Center by a global reorganization of the site, functional spaces and to reveal a new image. The installation of a new building in the foreground of the existing buildings changes the approach and the current perception of the site. The volumetry of the extension corresponds to that of the existing Building B and remains consistent with its environment. A planted forecourt accessible from the rue de la Mairie puts at a distance and enhances the new entrance of the Hospital Center, centralizing the reception of patients and visitors.
The accesses are differentiated and hierarchical. Visitors and staff arrive from the rue de la Mairie, then each enters the building through a specific entrance. Logistical access from the rue des Maquisards is totally independent. A service courtyard is centrally located between the EHPAD Home Haeffely and the new logistics centre.
The project clearly organizes the functional spaces from a main North-South circulation axis starting in the entrance hall and connecting all the buildings. This axis structures perpendicular antennas serving the various services. The flows are simplified by the legibility of the horizontal and vertical circulations and functionalities.
Natural light is favoured in the circulations by frames on the facade and large patios. It provides visual comfort and plays the role of guide in the understanding and practice of the premises.
The distribution of services follows the indications of the program, supported by a precise phasing of the successive operations necessary for the realization of the project.
The constructive choices of the extension meet the challenges of flexibility and evolution of the spaces of a hospital building. The principle of load-bearing central cores providing bracing and load-bearing facades leaves the floors free for any subsequent redevelopment.
