HMTX World Headquarters is being billed as the greenest building in the State of Connecticut. On track to meet 6 of 7 petals of the Living Building Challenge – the most rigorous set of environmental design standards in the world – the project seeks to set a new standard for green building. The project is a mixed-use facility with offices, a product design innovation and fabrication maker facility, artist-in-residence housing units, and space that serves as an art gallery for the company’s private art collection. Powered completely by renewable energy on-site, the project focuses on art, technology and industry product creation and shows that you can balance modern design – inspired by Bauhaus design principles where form is derived by function – within a deeply biophilic and deep green philosophical framework. Water is an integral element of the project design, with a feature water wall bordering the entry courtyard to provide calming white noise that masks the sounds of the adjacent highway, stormwater rain gardens to infiltrate water naturally on-site, and a 5,000-gallon cistern that captures rainwater from the roof to be used for on-site irrigation. The building is constructed entirely free of products that contain Red-List Chemicals, ensuring no chemicals harmful to human health are present, while ultra-efficient mechanical systems ensure the building provides the highest levels of thermal comfort for building occupants. Elevated above the landscape, each space in the building features views in at least three directions, connecting occupants to the surrounding landscape. Located in an urban setting, the building offers a contemplative retreat from the noise of the world, providing a place to slow down and encourage creativity, collaboration, well-being, and the creation of new deep green flooring products for the building industry. Most importantly, it serves as a beacon of hope for a more ecologically conscious and regenerative future.
