Sited on a spectacular granite ledge at the top of a gentle slope overlooking the Eastern Way, this vacation house faces south overlooking Bunker Ledge, Sutton Island and the approach to Seal Harbor, Maine. The house is carefully nestled into its site to take advantage of the views and to achieve optimal room orientations. Approached from the north through an entry court carved out of the woods, the house is long and thin and is bent in plan to conform to the natural contours of the granite ledge. Essentially one room deep, this plan arrangement maximizes natural light and ventilation and creates varying views from the rooms along the downhill face. The house has a traditional material palette of natural cedar shingles and wood trim painted a dark blue-green to harmonize with the surrounding woodland. A generous stone terrace paved with granite excavated from the site is situated along the south elevation to allow the rooms within to open out towards the view.
