Urban Design Group transformed 770–774 Girard Street NW in Washington, DC, into 15 upscale loft-style residences by seamlessly integrating new construction with a historic warehouse. The project carefully preserved defining elements such as heavy timber beams, wooden ceilings, floating staircases, and gas fireplaces while introducing complementary contemporary construction to accommodate modern amenities, parking, and unit layouts. Balancing historic restoration with neighborhood context, the design maintained the site’s industrial character and the scale of the surrounding Columbia Heights streetscape. The completed development revitalizes a previously vacant structure, offering sophisticated residences that celebrate architectural heritage while enhancing the vibrancy and growth of the community.
