The Hazel McCallion Central Library, formerly Mississauga Central Library, is a major interior renovation project located in downtown Mississauga adjacent to City Hall. Mississauga, a major city of 713,000 immediately west of Toronto, is served by a 17-branch library system, for which the Central Library also houses administrative and logistical support. RDHA has previously designed the award-winning Lakeview, Port Credit, and Lorne Park branch libraries for the City.
The project scope included a complete interior renovation of all five floors of the existing building, transforming a dated facility into a vibrant, contemporary public institution. The renewed library introduces a technology-focused digital hub at the lowest level, along with spaces for events, lectures, and seminars. Upper floors accommodate public collections, a library café, flexible event and classroom spaces, an automated book sortation system, quiet study rooms, teen and children’s areas, a municipal business enterprise centre, gallery exhibition space, the refurbished Noel Ryan Auditorium, community classrooms, administrative offices, and collaborative, multigenerational maker spaces.
Although initiated as an interior-only project, the design process expanded to include master planning of both the interior and exterior. Studies explored new spatial strategies and exterior options that demonstrate the potential to transform the library’s urban presence.
The revitalization establishes Hazel McCallion Central Library as the city’s primary cultural destination—a contemporary hub for learning, innovation, and civic life within Mississauga’s downtown core.
