As the grandmother of the customer reached an age where she could not perform all activities on her own anymore and the client lived too far away to support her it was considered to move into the grandmother’s house. However, the building could not meet the requirements to accommodate two other persons.
After initial analyzes and due to the elongated property an annex was suggested that should meet all needs: on the one hand the grandmother would be able to spend her last years in a familiar environment, on the other hand she would maintain her privacy. The annex would combine the virtues of a hotel room with the advantages of a house. The garden should ensure areas of privacy as well as areas of community.
A very unconventional and unorthodox project idea came into being in which the annex was designed as a single story structure and functions as an independent building. Important parameters for the design of the floor plan were the path of the sun, the required room sequence and the desire for two different terraces. For these reasons the building performs twice a change of direction where at the bending edges two terraces come into being. The angles were not chosen randomly but according to the path of the sun. The façade makes a reference to aging with dignity: the timber was clothed with copper traces that develop a patina over time combined with natural wood that turns gray and broom finished concrete surfaces.
