Eckernförde’s harbour looks back on a long and active history of fishing and industry. This, however, fell by the wayside as time went by and the area has fallen into disuse. Today a brand new utilization concept, resurrecting this site with its close proximity to the town centre and beach have made the new residential and business development extremely attractive.
The first stage of the new development was at the front, looking directly out to sea, with 42 commercial holiday apartments, including spaces for gastronomy on the ground floor. This was the first of seven new projects. Due to the exposed form of the building and the position of the bay, this development is recognizable from practically every angle, whether from land or the sea.
A New and Distinguished Landmark
Opening at an angle on to the pier and harbour front, a two-sided inner courtyard ensued, over which a huge symmetrical sail is suspended. This sail forming a breathtaking “wow” factor on the front, is a spectacular landmark. It is visible whether entering the harbour from the sea or land, and builds a starting point for a new urban district.
The restaurants, glazed from floor to ceiling, look out in all directions over the harbour.
Modern holiday appartments in various sizes, with views out to sea or towards the town are all equipped with generous balconies.
A Modern Interpretation of the Maritime Style
The area below the sail between the appartments and the harbour has a particular function. It is shielded acoustically from the other buildings and is therefore a suitable venue for concerts and noisy events! The special construction of the appartment facades, the balconies with glazed ship railings, ensure additional protection against noise.
An elegant, maritime appearance is the result of a combination of light plaster surfaces, clinker bricks and glazed panorama apartment balconies.
