It is difficult to miss the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Indoor Stadium as one passes the Haji Ali in Worli. This imposing glass and aluminum clad structure has been a host to numerous events such as international sports competitions, exhibitions, standup comedie shows, rock concerts, automobile launches and multicultural events.
However, this stadium was not always such a modern structure. The original stadium was constructed in 1950 and was just a large outdoor concrete pad with stepped concrete tiers surrounding it. Until the end of 2001, the stadium hosted numerous sports events such as wrestling matches and skating competitions. In 2002, the owners of the stadium, The National Sports Club of India, had a vision to expand the stadium to better suit the modern times that would accommodate not only international sports competitions but also variety of events such as exhibitions, concerts, product launches and cultural events.
A plan was conceived to demolish the original tiers and construct an ultra modern, fully air-conditioned indoor stadium in its place. Almost 14 acres of ground was excavated and an underground parking for almost 1000 cars was constructed. Four independent ramps were strategically placed to so that all cars could be evacuated from the basement within 20 min.
A 90 mts diameter columnless circular arena with 18 mts clear height was constructed over this parking structure. The vertical cores were placed in each of the four quadrants of this arena which would not only seamlessly transport people directly from the basement into the arena but also seggregate the people based on their ticketing priorities.
The success of any arena is the planning of the concourse space around it, which houses the concession areas and the support facilities. Sixteen (16) such large concourse zones were created around this arena which would act not only as a buffer space between the exterior and the arena but also be used as F&B and pre-function areas. Today, some of these halls are converted into lounges, food outlets, dining areas, ticketing spaces etc. which support the activities of the events in the arena.
The stadium has a seating capacity of 3500, which are luxurious cinema styled reclining chairs with unrestricted view of the arena. Additional 5500 people could be seated in the arena during stage events. Thirteen (13) sound proof rooms are located underneath the tiers which are used for floor management, sound control, VIP enclosures, green rooms and other support activities. Large steel girders support this columnless expanse of the roof which is clad in acoustically treated aluminum standing seam roofing system with 4 layers of sound insulating material that is specifically designed keeping in mind the potential of the arena to be used for concerts and music shows.
The Exterior of the stadium is clad in double glazed low 'e', toughen & laminated curtain-wall system to minimize the solar impact on the interior of the building. The building facade takes inspiration from sails of the boats in the Arabian Sea, which face the west side of the structure. 2300 pieces of double glazed, laminated glass pieces were individually measured to construct the four petals of the facade that adorn the roof of the building. The facade is clad in blue toughened glass and silver aluminum composite panel and offer inrestricted view of the Arabian Sea across.
This structure will be the largest indoor stadium in Mumbai.
