Guy-Rocher Pavilion — College Montmorency Health and Research Learning Center
In September 2019, College Montmorency inaugurated the new Health and Research Learning Center on its Laval campus, just north of Montreal. The four-story, 10,865-square-meter Guy-Rocher Pavilion marks the most significant investment in the college’s infrastructure since its founding in 1976.
The building's refined, white monolithic form signals the growing importance of research and health sciences within the institution. Dedicated to applied research in fields such as neurofeedback, microbiology, entomology, chemistry, and ecological agriculture, the pavilion integrates classrooms and laboratories designed to foster active learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
A central design challenge — introducing abundant natural light into the basement-level locker rooms — became the driving force behind the project’s architectural concept. The solution: a full-height atrium, extending from the basement through two upper floors, featuring an open bleacher system that connects indoor and outdoor spaces while flooding the interior with daylight. Complementing this, a fully glazed vertical void at the building's core further enhances natural illumination.
The centerpiece of the pavilion is its striking concrete atrium, clad in warm wood panels that bring a sense of balance and comfort to the raw materiality. Around this central volume, laboratories and classrooms are organized to maximize both function and user experience. Externally, contrasting volumes articulate the program: the white envelope houses the academic functions, while a sleek black volume delineates common areas and circulation spaces.
Sustainability is an integral part of the pavilion’s identity, in keeping with College Montmorency’s eight consecutive Cégep Vert Excellence certifications. The building features a 347-square-meter green roof and 70 urban agriculture forcing beds operated by a student committee, underscoring the college’s environmental commitment.
Within the atrium, the amphitheater seating incorporates Nova C Benches in Bracket configurations. Their substantial weight discourages relocation, while their ribbed finish complements the surrounding wood paneling. The modular benches offer flexible arrangements, creating a welcoming environment for students to gather, study, or simply pause between classes beneath the soaring cathedral ceiling and expansive curtain wall that invites daylight deep into the building.
With a total budget of $26 million CAD, the Guy-Rocher Pavilion exemplifies College Montmorency’s vision for modern, sustainable, and inspiring learning environments.
