Grove House is a soulful reimagining of a 1920s Californian bungalow on Sydney’s North Shore, designed, built, and delivered by Cadence & Co. The project exemplifies the studio’s holistic approach where heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary family living come together in perfect balance.
The design began as an exercise in restraint and clarity. Rather than demolish and rebuild, Cadence & Co chose to preserve the home’s original structure, adding a contemporary extension that contrasts and complements the heritage character. The result is a dialogue between old and new, a narrative of continuity that honours the home’s past while shaping its future.
The spatial experience unfolds through a softly arched hallway that opens into a soaring light filled pavilion. A dramatic cathedral ceiling defines the central living and dining area, where the family gathers, connected to a lush central courtyard beyond. Material warmth from timber, render, and stone brings cohesion and tactility, while curved thresholds and sculptural detailing soften transitions and invite calm movement throughout.
A curved ribbon stair links to a tranquil upper level retreat for the family’s teenage sons, integrating privacy within the roofline while maintaining visual and spatial connection to the main living spaces.
Set within a dense suburban context, Grove House achieves a rare balance between openness and seclusion. The garden, designed by Adam Robinson Design, acts as a green spine through the home, enhancing sustainability, privacy, and year round livability.
Grove House stands as a testament to Cadence & Co’s philosophy that architecture can be both timeless and deeply personal, enriching daily life through craftsmanship, light, and enduring connection.
