Awanui Residence is a thoughtful restoration and reimagining of a 1938 Georgian revival home on Sydney’s North Shore. Listed on the Australian Institute of Architects’ 20th Century Buildings of Significance Register, the project exemplifies Cadence & Co’s commitment to preserving architectural integrity while enhancing contemporary family life.
The brief called for a design that could honour the home’s layered history while introducing spatial clarity and warmth. Every intervention was deliberate and timeless, balancing respect for the existing structure with the needs of modern living. Rather than replicate the past, Cadence & Co approached the design as a continuation of its story, where heritage formality meets a renewed sense of openness, colour, and light.
Internally, the ground floor was reconfigured to improve flow and functionality while maintaining the original footprint. The layout now offers intuitive circulation and a sense of calm spaciousness. Materials were chosen for their tactility and natural patina — oak, lime plaster, stone, and steel combine to create depth and quiet luxury. Custom details such as a sculptural marble rangehood, tailored cabinetry, and internal steel doors with reeded glass bring refinement while maintaining connection to the building’s architectural roots.
New brass insertions frame the kitchen and study as visual bookends and revealing the layers of the home’s evolution. The streetfront bay windows remain a defining feature, restored through specialist craftsmanship to anchor the design and invite natural light deep into the plan.
Infused with subtle Art Deco influences, the design embraces the client’s willingness to explore colour, pattern, and playfulness. Awanui Residence stands as a testament to sensitive renewal — a home that bridges history and modern life through material honesty, craftsmanship, and enduring charm.
