Located on lower Fifth Avenue in a building designed by Emery Roth & Sons in 1950, this project
involved the combination of two small apartments on the 20th floor into a pied-a-terre for an
academic who travels frequently. Our client’s desire for a flowing space that would take advantage of
the open views to the east, south and west was complicated by the cluster of structural columns and
building utility risers at the center of the plan. We reorganized the space with a long entry gallery that
opens into two guest bedroom suites at the northeast and northwest, and into a living room, dining
room and kitchen at the southeast. The master bedroom suite, which also serves as the owner’s
study and library, opens off the living room at the southwest. The detailing of the spaces is modern
and minimal and a uniform material palette that includes bamboo floors, grey green-stained aniegre
millwork, white plaster walls and dark-gray stone counters is used throughout.
