The existing Green Acres house was a disproportionately small 3 bedroom house in relation to its 3 acre plot just outside West Dean in the Wiltshire countryside. Upon purchasing the house as a family home the client wished to extend and refurbish the entire house to a high specification.
The refurbishments included internal alterations on both floors to reconfigure the kitchen, utility room, staircase & hallway on the ground floor and create an additional bedroom on the first floor from a large under-utilised bedroom and create additional en-suite facilities for the existing bedrooms.
To upgrade the house to a more environmentally sustainable standard, insulation was increased in the loft and all light fittings were replaced with low energy models. Underfloor heating was installed on the ground floor, supplied by a new air-source heat pump. This is then supplemented by two new wood burning stoves which need only be used during the coldest winter periods.
The new extension accommodates a lounge on the ground floor and a master bedroom with dressing area and en-suite bathroom on the first floor. The lounge has a wall of glazed folding doors and glazed corner window taking advantage of panoramic views over the valley beyond the gardens.
To meet the planning authorities wishes, the extension was designed to match the style of the existing house on the visible South & West facades at first floor level. The more private ground floor facing into the garden is then in a contrasting contemporary style to meet the aspirations of the client.
