A recent sustainable USGBC LEED Gold facility at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN) designed by LEA Architects have made very favorable impressions on many tourists, visitors, and pilots. Setting the GCN’s sustainable template for Arizona’s future, the sustainable architecture of the GCN Airport Operations Building + ARFF, a LEED Gold facility, is inspired by the surrounding beauty and serenity of the surrounding Grand Canyon which is inspirational now and will always into our future. The sustainable architecture draws from the materials, colors, and textures of the natural environment including; ground concrete, local split-face masonry, local natural stone, glass, and weathering steel define the building surface and exude a sense of sustainability and presence. Roof planes extend past the masonry walls to provide solar protection of windows and protect decks and walkways during snowfall. South facing weathering recycled steel roofs over the eight apparatus bays provide additional passive heating to the bays during the winter months. 120 tons of free mule manure from Grand Canyon Park mule stables helped to bio-remediate and restore the specific contaminated GCN project site. Architect Larry Enyart, FAIA, LEED Fellow won the Coconino County Sustainable Building Award, Advanced Level +.
