The nature of this heavily constrained site in London lent itself to a perimeter form of mews development. The challenge was to create a mews development with soul around a central landscaped area with narrow window-to-window distances and some noisy neighbours (a primary school to one side, and a steel drum rehearsal studio to the other).
Our design for Goldney Road comprises eight 100 sqm three-bed homes facing each other across a narrow mews. The fronts of the houses are set back and forwards to create defensible space, modulation in the depth of the plan and as much width in key areas of the mews as possible.
Each of the dual aspect homes have a small garden area, a roof terrace and are arranged around a landscaped communal garden with a green wall at the site boundary. The houses comfortably achieve CFSH Level 4, incorporating high levels of insulation, triple glazing, rainwater harvesting, PV panels, sedum roofs, SUDS, whole house ventilation, excellent daylighting and electric car charging points.
