GIA chose a space within Golden Tower overlooking HuaShan 1914 Creative Park to house its relocated Gemological trade school for Taiwan. A design & build project with a strict schedule and budget, Orbit worked closely with GIA and local partners to design a space that celebrates GIA’s global educational mission with nods to Taiwanese design and culture.
The design principles were inspired by GIA’s “Four C’s of Diamond Grading” - Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat - which together offered a refined framework which Orbit carried through the design to create a sophisticated, balanced and meaningful space, reflecting Taiwanese culture in form and function.
The colour palette was inspired by Taiwan’s landscape, temporally shifting under the sunlight’s daily colour range, with accent colours simultaneously representing the rare fancy colour diamonds.
The facilities include 2 separate suites within the 446 sqm space: An education wing and an administrative office. The daily experiences of both the students and the staff were considered and choreographed to create a highly functional and space-efficient layout and design that dovetailed cleanly with local fire regulations and existing building constraints, while creating an inspiring, uplifting and biophilic experience.
Upon arrival in the Reception area with feature walls and graphics, students are greeted and then pass into a shared breakout lounge space, which gives access to the 3 gemology classrooms. Branching off of Reception is a shared meeting space with display cases for gemology equipment sales.
Staff pass through Reception into the secure administration office suite, which opens up to the view of the tree-lined street and Park beyond, maximising daylight for the instructor's office. Private offices, a translation quiet room, and a staff Break Area surround the 3 sides of the open office, creating an interactive workspace that supports both collaboration and quiet focus work.
