Gallery Square (HS1) is a vibrant, mixed-use development located at 8119 Birchmount Road in the heart of Downtown Markham, developed by The Remington Group and designed by BDP Quadrangle. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the project represents the next evolution of the city’s cultural and commercial hub, blending residential, retail, public art, and civic space into a cohesive, pedestrian-oriented urban district.
Spanning approximately 750,000 square feet, Gallery Square comprises three high-end residential towers above a richly animated podium that includes two levels of retail - totalling over 100,000 square feet - and a 30,000 square foot destination art gallery. The central feature is a European-inspired public piazza, activated by restaurants, seating areas, and a three-storey staircase that links the ground level to upper retail and amenity spaces. This plaza is designed to be the social heart of the project, hosting events, performances, and community gatherings year-round.
The architecture is distinguished by its precast brick and terra cotta façades, combining warmth, durability, and heritage character with contemporary detailing. Large entryways, generous public spaces, and amenity areas that extend onto the street create a welcoming and connected experience, promoting street life and walkability.
In addition to the residential and retail components, the project incorporates an innovative art and culture strategy, including integrated artworks, performance spaces, and immersive design elements visible even from within residential suites. The future art gallery and adjacent public realm will anchor the development as a cultural landmark for the region.
Sustainability is core to the project’s vision, with green roofs, high-performance building envelopes, and a target of LEED Silver certification. The site is transit-connected and bicycle-friendly, and the building’s systems and materials are selected for longevity and energy efficiency.
Overall, Gallery Square is more than a residential complex - it is a city-building initiative that combines design excellence, cultural vibrancy, sustainability, and inclusive public space to create a lasting impact in Markham’s urban centre.
