The proposal for Gallaudet University's 6th Street NE properties envisions a vibrant, diverse mixed-use development that bridges the adjacent neighborhood with the historically isolated campus through a series of connective open space corridors and destinations. The plan will evolve through a robust community process. A series of interactive, graphically clear playing cards will be shared with stakeholders during interactive sessions in order to engage users through a tactile and visual medium. Additionally, all elements of the community and design process will consider the unique needs of the University's deaf population. Deaf Space Design Guidelines, such as maintaining clear sight lines or providing prominent landmarks for wayfinding, along with participant feedback will be distilled into a kit of parts that will be used to shape the project's open space.
