This project was the challenging renovation of a 1950's cape in Newport, RI. The owners requested that we convert the small outdated cape into a more traditional "shingle-style" home typical to the community during the late 19th century. The biggest challenge was that the owners wanted the building to remain livable during the construction. Our solution was to remove ungainly additions on either side of the main structure and replace them with gambrel ended additions with the central structure remaining.
In a historic community like Newport, Rhode Island, much of the draw is the elegance and graciousness of the old structures that have been preserved. To take an ordinary 1950's cape and convert it to a structure that fits into the historic architectural fabric is a sure way to enhance its value.
