The Flycycle presents a new way of thinking about bike parking, in which functional form and elegant design come together to provide a user-friendly solution for expanding bicycle infrastructure.
The Flycycle improves bike parking by raising the front wheel of one bike 6 inches off the ground, stabilizing the wheel to prevent the bike from tipping over and blocking other parked bikes. This allows a second bike to be parked in parallel without the usual entanglement of handlebars. By cleanly parking bikes and nesting their handlebars the clear space between bikes can be maintained while reducing the layout space for racks, saving approximately 20% in layout width, or put another way, you can install 6 Flycycle racks in the space of 5 conventional racks. This added space savings opens new opportunities for building owners and designers, where tight designs can now be afforded the wiggle room to explore alternative layouts or added amenities.
The Flycycle’s long tube frame also improves security by providing multiple locking points for wheels and bikes of different shapes and sizes. The ramp is user friendly and allows the biker to push her front wheel up and into place instead of lifting it. As a single rack on the sidewalk, or in rack formation in garages or outside, the Flycycle’s elegant shape adds a touch of beauty to its surroundings wherever it is installed.
The Flycycle’s unique design and fresh approach to cycling infrastructure enables the project to engage a global network of planners and designers, where carbon-free urban mobility has become a critical component in the development of climate action plans around the world. Though our project is small, its ability to perform as an urban system allows it to have positive a broad reaching impact on the architectural environment wherever it is installed.
