Floating Planes

This garden is a study in ascending forms, rectangular shapes and floating planes. The garden makes meaningful connections to the house at multiple levels, with a quiet, graceful gesture of movement.
We began with a flat, compact and angular San Francisco lot. In order to connect the house to the garden at three different levels, we sculpted the land into a series of steps, terraces and planters.
The lower level of the home opens onto a burnished bronze concrete wall. Steps lead to the garden above, which emerges as a series of floating planes. Elevated planters rise up between the terraces, anchoring them to the site.
The garden is framed with custom fencing, including a translucent windscreen. The design is punctuated with colorful plantings, glass sculptures and beautiful materials, including iridescent tile and cast concrete paving. The back of the garden features a lovely surprise — an elegant secret garden with seating for afternoon tea.
