The complex of modern residences "Floating Cubes" is located on the western coast of the island of Aegina, on the borders of the Marathon settlement.
The plot's direct contact with the coastline and its unobstructed views of the Saronic Gulf were the basis for the design of the residences. The shape of the plot, the mandatory distance from the road and the application of the beach line were three parameters that significantly influenced the long and narrow layout of the building along the coast.
The main volume of the building blends with the "rough" landscape of the area through its materiality. The facades of the lower level, clad in local stone, emerge from the rocky environment and at the same time give the image of a solid "platform" on which the rest of the building is based. A characteristic element of the facades of the building are the white cuboid balconies that are developed as an extension of its main spaces, emerge from the building mass and "float" above the exterior of the residences.
The main building unit consists of two separate residences, as well as a detached studio residence located on the lower level. Wanting to emphasize the privacy of each one, the residences are strictly divided along a vertical axis and are framed by a fully formed surrounding area that unites the different functions.
On the ground floor of each residence, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The bedroom areas have direct access to the plateaus that define the exterior of each house, with large openings ensuring communication between them. On the same level, there is a studio-guesthouse, which operates independently but is part of one of the two residences.
The first floor functions as the main entrance of the residence and hosts the living areas for each of them. Communication with the other floors is made through metal stairs that are developed as "folded surfaces" and are covered with wood.
The second floor houses the remaining bedrooms for each residence, with two of them assuming the role of the "master bedroom", with corresponding bathroom areas.
In the surrounding area, large plateus were created that function as outdoor living and dining areas as a continuation of the corresponding interior spaces. Access to the coast is direct from the exterior spaces of the ground floor, which develop parallel to it but maintain their privacy.
The choice of materials in the construction was based on the aesthetic requirements for the configuration of the shell and its’ bioclimatic character. The interior of the houses is decorated with furniture and constructions that approach a minimalist aesthetic. In the exterior areas, the use of local stone as well as of smoothed cement flooring, reinforce the image of the coexistence of the composition with the environment.
