Fire Station 21 of the Vallée‑du‑Richelieu Intermunicipal Fire Safety Authority is located in Beloeil, on boulevard Yvon‑L’Heureux Nord, at a strategic point between six municipalities in the Montérégie region. The result of a shared intermunicipal investment, it concentrates regional resources in a single facility that improves response times while asserting a discreetly contemporary civic presence in a transforming landscape.
The building draws inspiration from the lowlands of the Saint Lawrence River and the silhouettes of the nearby Monteregian hills. Its low, mineral form seems to rise from the plain like an exposed rock outcrop, echoing the magma intrusions that shaped the local topography and reflecting the station’s role as a calm protective landmark for the territory. From above, the fan‑shaped plan makes the hierarchy of public, administrative and operational zones legible at a glance, clarifying everyday access and emergency routes.
On two levels and roughly 2,500 m², the station combines the apparatus hall for emergency vehicles, decontamination and gear‑storage areas, and the firefighters’ living quarters with the administrative headquarters of the Authority. Individual bunk rooms, a generous kitchen and dining space, a home‑cinema‑style lounge and a gym support long on‑call periods, while the upper level accommodates offices and meeting rooms for management and training. Daylight, framed views toward the training yard and a palette of robust materials give these interiors a calm, durable character suited to the demands of the work.
The former snow‑dump site strongly shaped the project, with its irregular geometry, limited bearing capacity and residual contamination. The building is therefore raised on piles and rests on thick layers of insulation, its plan following the lot lines to optimize site occupation and the fluidity of emergency circulation. The exterior layout incorporates training areas for vehicle extrication and specialized containers for live‑fire simulations, so that the station functions simultaneously as an operational hub, a regional training ground and a linear civic marker at the northern entrance to Beloeil.
