Landmark and Gateway
Visible from afar, the House of Enginee-ring creates a landmark for FH Campus Wien. Together with the student
residence, it forms the gateway to the campus site.
Brief: The House of Engineering, accommodating FH Campus Wien’s Building and Design, Technology and Applied Life Sciences
departments, was the first phase in the transformation of the University of Applied Sciences, located in south Vienna, into a modern university complex.
Realisation: An S-shaped structure was developed to suit the sloping site with three blocks housing the main functional units: lecture theatres to the north, the laboratory and research area to the south and an admin block linking the two in
the centre. The S-shape creates two outdoor spaces to the west and east with a promenade descending in a series of cascades to the central campus plaza.
Features: The outer promenade guides users into the building, highlighting the difference in levels. Corridors and access areas open up to provide spaces for informal exchange in each individual block. The façade with its horizontal bands and rounded corners provides visual coherence over the complex as a whole.
