The Project transformed a 950 sq metre disused space under the Queen Elizabeth Hall at Southbank Centre into the ‘Festival Village’, a social space for artists from across the world, which includes a café, bar and exhibition space.
Conceived and built by over 200 volunteers led by Lyn Atelier in partnership with design studio TILT. We transformed a previously disused space over five months, demolishing walls and designing and making everything from concrete furniture, two bars, a new front facade to the graphics and way finding.
Artistic Director of Southbank Centre, Jude Kelly cites Festival Village as a ‘demonstration of the power of what can be achieved when people join forces to work together to create something new.’
The project has won the FX International Design Awards Prize for Public Space Schemes.
We used reclaimed graffittied boards to make cafe tables with lights above made from whisks. The bar front was made from reclaimed bricks and a screen from ratchet strapping and weld mesh.
