Fenwick exemplifies design excellence as a contemporary, mid-rise apartment building that complements and elevates the urban fabric of the Silver Spring community. The design and development team’s commitment to urban design, sustainability, and the local community make Fenwick a unique and personal place to live. Deft use of three main façade materials; brick, cement panel, and cement lap siding, serve to break the building massing into discreet elements reminiscent of the houses and townhouses in the surrounding neighborhood. The project includes a public plaza which is a threshold between the neighborhood and the CBD and welcomes pedestrians, cyclists, residents and neighbors. To activate the streetscape beyond the plaza the design includes a series of residential units with doors opening directly onto the sidewalk, mimicking the rhythms of the adjacent lesser density neighborhood. The community includes innovative amenities that provide residents a place to retreat or to connect and gather together. The private amenity courtyard was designed as a seamless extension of the interior club room, with a pool, fire place, water feature, outdoor kitchen and pavilion. The 6th floor roof terrace takes advantage of views of the city center, features an outdoor television and seating area, and personal “nests” for lounging in front of the lush, green, living wall. The result is collection of public and private spaces, with a defined vocabulary of materials and construction details in common, but each with its own unique mood and character. The design excellence and success of this project is the result of a clear vision and close collaboration between the owner, the design team and the construction team throughout the project.
