Our clients requested a house of substance, that was timeless, suited the site and possibly softened with curves. Situated on the South side of the hill with views to the South, lighter colours were requested. The context is reasonably dense, with large homes to the North and West and some charming older Sydney walk up brick apartment complexes to the East, one of which had curved corners.
The design of the house evolved to be a solid sided building, with apertures for view to the South and for sun to the North. After establishing this strategy, the form was softened by curving the corners, Northeast and Southwest corners contained outdoor spaces, so the insides of these corners were curved, whereas the other corners accommodated indoor spaces, so the external corner was curved. The side walls of the external spaces were perforated, with double height hit and moss brickwork to allow airflow and provide privacy to these spaces.
