The Eyebeam design concept is evocative of Chelsea, a changing industrial area of Manhattan, New York, as a transforming neighborhood. The environmental scale of two-story warehouses and garages serves as the organizational structure for the new museum. The garage is an incomplete, ever-changing and perfectly dynamic space. Stacking and interlocking this garage model produces an assembly of high tech new media shops, mingling on the borders of traditional boundaries of production and exhibition, visitor and visited, curator and artist, observer and observed. The notion of the museum as an incomplete instrument to be used, altered, and explored renders this building timeless and constantly viewed in modes of inquiry. The Eyebeam Atelier incorporates design features more common to a theater space unconventionally throughout the building.
