The Harmony of Industry and Nature
Located in the iconic landscape of Guilin, the Esquel Integral Industrial Campus is a transformative 200,000 sq/m sustainable textile hub designed to harmonize high-tech industry with karst topography. A collaboration between Chief Architect Ronald Lu & Partners and Partner Architect RCPA+ PW Hsiao Architects & Associates, the project replaces the traditional industrial monolith with a series of low-slung buildings that sit lightly on the water.
Clusters on Water
The campus is organized as a series of architectural clusters shaped around expansive water courts. This layout serves three critical functions: it echoes the river landscape of Guilin, naturally cools the microclimate, and effectively softens the industrial scale into a human-centric environment. RCPA's design focuses on the public and operational core - including the visitor center, R&D facilities, library, and auditorium - ensuring these essential spaces maintain a "porous edge" with nature.
A Symbolic Threshold
The entry sequence reimagines the traditional Chinese courtyard house. A minimalist canopy supported by slender, tree-like columns creates a symbolic threshold that feels open and permeable. Visitors transition via a narrow stone walkway across reflecting pools, where the architecture is intentionally understated to allow the reflections of the sky and mountains to take center stage.
Brand as Structure
The interior architecture translates the client's "Integral" identity into physical form. In the lobby, the brand's emblem - reorganized from the characters "十" and "如" - generates the logic for an interlocking wood lattice wall. This three-dimensional structure echoes the rhythmic crossing of threads in textile weaving, embodying the brand's commitment to craftsmanship and material innovation.
