A second skin! – a custom suit made of wood
The elementary school, which was built in the 1970s, had long been bursting at the seams when funding was approved in 2016 and planning for the renovation work could begin.
The renovation of the Elementary School in Reichenau is understood as “building on” the existing structure, because the existing structure offered the qualities to reorganize the internal functional processes with minor alterations and smaller spatial extensions and to enable contemporary teaching methods.
Not everything that is old is bad. Renovation is a new start without cutting the roots. Old and new complement each other and give the building an interesting character.
The newly created connecting wing between the gym and the elementary school, the new entrance situation was arranged in addition to the checkroom. The relocation of the entrance means that the gym can now also be accessed from the elementary school in a handicapped-accessible manner. Another advantage of this restructuring is that the previously closed front side could be opened with generous glazing to bring a lot of daylight into the “marketplaces”.
The classrooms form the outer layer, the ancillary and wet rooms are located in the middle, while the open areas for breaks are oriented towards the glass fronts at the front. On the upper floor, the newly constructed area opens up to below the silhouette of the roof and, thanks to its colorful design, forms a visually separated learning landscape with generous air space. - "All classrooms open directly into the marketplaces!" - the lower group room can also be directly connected to the outdoor area with its generous glazing.
The central development zone in connection with the two market places serves as an open and free learning area in addition to the stay and extension of the classrooms. This turns the elementary school into a cluster school in mini format!
The existing building structure, characterized by projections and recesses, could be combined in a new and simple building envelope through the necessary spatial extensions. Without great gestures, the interplay of old and new now combines and forms a calm but self-confident building envelope through the curtain wall wooden façade.
Sustainable planning
The interplay of structural analysis, building physics and architecture gave rise to the idea of a sustainable building renovation with a front-mounted and rear-ventilated timber façade. The solid existing building was left in its entirety and wrapped with a new, airtight and highly insulated timber frame construction (facade and roof).
Sustainable architecture and urban development reflect a careful use of building materials and energy. A holistic planning approach to build ecologically, economically and socially sustainable represents an increasingly important design approach.
Tp3 Architects are committed to sustainable architecture and thus to a responsible and integral approach to planning that unites the most complex parameters of the building tasks we are given in a factual, functional and simple architectural language.
