This Project is a part of open architectural competition for the development of central point in the main st. of the city of Eilat, Israel.
The objective of the competition was to design the city hall and a public space. The project will serve as leverage for developing the urban center.
Eilat is Israel's southernmost city in Israel. It is known worldwide for the it's beautiful scuba diving sites and, beaches and hotels. Its strongest feature is the dramatic encounter between the mountains, desert and sea. The city enjoys over 350 days of sun a year, luxuries hotels and beautiful sandy beaches. A highly rich and colorful reef makes it one of the most beautiful diving sites.
The urban analysis came up with the need to thicken the northern side of the boulevard, mainly with commercial uses in order to create massive pedestrian activity.
Establishment of high quality, attractive and innovative commercial areas will be the engine of renewal and development in existing commercial areas, such as the Red Sea Mall and Rechter Center as well as construction of office buildings, commercial and tourism in the region.
The concepts of the design of the city hall and the city square came from its natural resources, the municipality's aspiration to create a unique project that will be a landmark in an international scale.
Pouring into the conceptual pot the sun, desert, sea, people, tourists, events, leadership, innovation etc. I came up with this design that gives my interpretation for the physical, psychological and cultural to all of the above.
Another aspect, most important, of the design was the subject of the ecological footprint.
The facades of the building where designed with negative slope to reduce the direct radiation of the sun on the structure. A floating solar roof also reduces the direct radiation on the building and allows removal of excessive heat between the roof of the building and the floating solar roof. Tilting the roof of the building at an ideal angle to the South as part of the buildings morphology, makes the best conditions to create solar power. Recycling gray water used for cooling the building and its surroundings and recycling the waste by the municipality etc. all to reduce to minimum the ecological footprint.
The design of the city square enables a large veriaty of activities.
City square will serve as the main square in public events and performances in local and international festivals, fairs and other urban activities. The city square will be an active center in all areas of life - culture, entertainment, official events, leisure and commerce. The design of the open large scale creates small places that allows the daily users feel comfortable which can be seen as one large area for big local and international events.
The wavy topography of the open area, inclines away from the city hall, by that creating an ideal slope for cultural performances etc. another outcome is the commercial area underneath that floor. This commercial area is a part of the engine of renewal and development of the surrounding area along with the city square and the city hall that will create massive activity in this area.
