The Half Price Hut (HPH) sells half price tickets for Edinburgh Fringe shows. In 2014, The Fringe commissioned Collective Architecture to develop a design for a new hut that would increase the number of sales points/windows from 6 to 8. Two of these windows are dedicated to ticket collections only and 3 of the windows are wheelchair accessible. The huts are only in use for the duration of the festival and require to be stored for the remainder of the year.
From the brief, we identified two key drivers for the design of a new HPH; a functional space that meets the growing demand of the event that can be assembled and stored easily and a structure that has a strong visual presence on the Mound.
2 converted shipping containers provide watertight accommodation for ticket sales and production office staff. The shipping containers provide support for lightweight timber roof structures that can be stored within the containers when not in use. The scaffolding and decorative panels can be constructed in various configurations providing, potentially, a ‘new shape’ each year.
The visual style of the structure relates to the notion of the 'hut' and the neighbouring market stalls, while allowing for integration of the sponsor’s branding.
