EDGE Amsterdam West is a 48.000 sqm redevelopment of an office building from the 1970’s. Designed by former de Architekten Cie architect, Oyevaar. Located in the transforming area of Amsterdam West, the project has APG and Alliander as key tenants. The building has been upgraded to become an advanced and sustainable office space, meeting the highest requirements in terms of sustainability, technology and office health.
A new and spectacular glazed dome has been placed to cover the atrium, transforming the unused exterior space into the new heart of the building and bringing lots of natural daylight into the working spaces. The cupola has a rich biophilic design, introducing a new micro geometry in the logic of the building composition.
All the facades of the building are fully renovated. The exterior windows are replaced by new and higher baywindows with high-quality glass. The character of the existing building is anyway well respected with the preservation of the rhythm given by the original massive brick walls, baywindow and white horizontal aluminum stripes.
The atrium façade has also been totally new designed in terms of material and shape. Fully glazed, it helps the natural daylight to reach the deep office floors. The elevator shafts are taken away from the atrium, replaced by four prominent stairs, designed also to guide tenants towards healthy life choices. New big terraces are designed on the first floor, to fully experience the new atrium and the glazed dome and to create extra multifunctional spaces.
To maximize the natural daylight into the working spaces, the eight round shafts for installations, located all over the building, are taken away and replaced by new squared light shafts that open up the floors from bottom to the roof.
