Architectural transformation
The school adapts to new spatial configurations for school lunch and daycare with inviting lounge areas, a library and dwell zones in a relaxed atmosphere - these were the requirements for the transformation project at the Montfort Elementary School, which is currently attended by around 230 children.
The area directly at the intersection of school entrance and recess yard proved to be the most suitable location to be reconstructed into the necessary type of spaces. They are designed in such a way that the schools lunch and daycare is located to allow for both meeting and retreat.
In touch with the existing
In the process, the existing situation - a multipurpose and a physics room - was rethought, restructured and new space was created for the children to have their breaktime at lunch and during daytime, within treasured spaces. In the context of the conversion, a kitchen was also integrated, which allows the staff to prepare the kids meals fresh and rich in vitamins directly on site. The goal was to use the existing structures, think and activate them differently along with rebuilding some elements.
Materials, interior design and sustainability
The warm white constructed plaster walls form an attractive counterpoint to the natural, warm wooden furniture and the enclosing natural curtains in the interior. These enter into a dialogue with the expressiveness of playfully colored textile elements in the area of the dwelling areas and library. The use of wood, a robust, local and ecological building material is central for a sustainable structure, a long service life and regional value
creation.
