Situated on a large lot on the East slopes of Magnolia, this project went through a series of design iterations, consisting of remodels, additions and full rebuild options. The location is blessed by scenic views of downtown Seattle even from relatively low elevations, particularly from the new East deck.
The final configuration of the house includes a large ADU on the lower level, with full access to the backyard, and a main unit spreading through the upper level, and part of the lower. The large garage offers support for the East deck.
This 4,000+ SF house morphs from a rather unassuming single-story presence on the front street, to a two-level articulated body with exposed steel structure and pilotis, and ultimately transitioning to a semi-open, see thru frame outlining the deck. The balance of the design hinges on the different heights and presence of the volumes of the building. The West to East transformation follows the growing space provided by the natural slope, the passage from public street space to private yard space, and the passage from silent privacy on the front to the uncontained margin of the open deck in the back.
