This new construction presented itself with a direct attempt to fit the design program around the principles of Vastu Shastra. While the design fully embraces the modern NW style, the special organization threaded carefully around the Vastu teachings, and the site orientation and constraints, choosing ultimately to place an inner court (brahamastan) at the core of the project distribution and design. Completed in 2023.
The corner lot for this project (open to the street on the North and West side) had a great opportunity for significant views of Lake Washington. A roof-top deck came immediately in the mix of program requirements, but immediately presented us with a challenge facing a 25 feet maximum heights. Among other things one of the first concept study regarded the opportunities of a 2 story vs. three story organization of the spaces.
Vastu principles and growing space requirements helped orient the design toward a three story solution, pushing the maximum capacity of the lot, and shrinking the courtyard/brahamastan to a see-thru symbol in the center of the house, around which revolved the stairs and vertical connection from the main floor to the roof-top deck. The trick is highlighted by the stair that transition from interior to exterior at the edge of the upper floor to the inner courtyard.
As it’s often the case, the house is equipped for hosting great family gatherings (it includes a total of six en-suite bedrooms), and the lounge spaces, each with their own take, are spread out amongst the three floors.
The fun part of the project was finding the thin line between privacy and connection, mindful spaces, and family ties.
