The reinvention of the D‘House Theatre and Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz not only updates the building and its surroundings but also reimagines their role in the cityscape. The listed heritage theatre was carefully updated to meet modern technological standards. The façade and roof, the latter now featuring greenery, underwent restoration, as did the public areas, including lighting and furnishings.
Originally facing the Hofgarten park, the relocated main entrance now opens to the reactivated Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz, seamlessly integrating the Schauspielhaus within the city. A high-quality urban space used for open air concerts, festivals and various public gatherings, emerges as a new type of urban element: a Third Place – mixture of diverse uses, relying on communication, understanding and societal and cultural exchange, creating a fusion of experiences that extends the theater‘s inner life
into the public space and enlivens it in synergistic ways, welcoming all segments of society and fostering a sense of community through sharedcultural experiences.
